Chicago Launches Extensive Video Surveillance System

Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) will implement an advanced citywide intelligent security system as part of Chicago's Operation Virtual Shield

Blind Preparation

If a family enters an emergency room with inflamed lesions covering their bodies, accompanied by fevers and debilitating weakness - symptoms of a chemical or biological attack - the admitting hospital should know who to call and how to treat each family member.

That wouldn't always happen, however. Almost six years after 9/11 - after spending billions of tax dollars on disaster preparedness - many cities remain unprepared to respond to a biological or chemical attack, according to several leaders in the public health community.

A lack of coherent national policy on biological and chemical weapons preparedness has produced a hodgepodge of ineffective initiatives at the local level, according to critics. Yet others say national standards frequently are ineffective at dictating local issues.

Workgroups--Information Sharing Initiative

The Regional Emergency Information Sharing Initiative, the first of a series, will bring together a broad range of personnel from all levels of government, from non-government organizations and from the private sector to collect, create and share information focused mostly on “back office” functions that support and enable response to emergency situations.  This initiative will include a combination of topical workgroup activities performed online and through conference calls and a working conference to be held at the State of Georgia Archives facility October 10-11, 2007.  A network will facilitate relationships among participants and access to experts and practitioners as well as a variety of information resources collected through these initiatives. It is the intent of this initiative to “cast a big net” collecting a wide variety of information resources including contacts, links, documents, agreements, processes, best practices, templates and many others.  One particular focus will be to highlight and obtain practical experience in working with a range of information tools and techniques for sharing and distributing information for emergency preparation and during emergency response.

The topics to be addressed in workgroups and at the conference will include Governance, Tagging/Tracking/Targeting, Mobility, Identity Management, Procurement & Benefit Distribution and Records Creation & Management.
